Here at the German military cemetery of Vladslo lies young war volunteer Peter Kollwitz. When he fell in October 1914, he had just turned eighteen. Deeply affected by the death of her son Käthe Kollwitz created the world famous expressionist statue "The Mourning Parents". The sculpture group, on which the Berlin artist worked for many years, was initially set up on the Roggeveld in Essen in 1932 and was moved to the Praetbos in Vladslo in 1957. The tombstone of the sculpture group bears different names, including that of her son. In all some 25,645 victims of the Great War lie buried here.
